Open European Youth Ultimate Championships 2016
Dear European (and more) junior ultimate responsibles, dear EUF (and more) federations,
just as the year ends, there are great news!
As you may know, in 2016, there will be U20 women and open WJUC (Junior worlds) in Wroclaw (Poland), and a separate OEYUC (U17).
After a survey with the member federations, on when to hold the U17 championships, the second half of July was preferre by a large majority. We as EUF are happy to have received an excellent bid that makes this possible, and can now announce when and where the U17 girls and open divisions will be played:
In Gent/Ghent (Belgium), within July 19-24th
More exact timings will be specified soon. It will start on July 19th or 20th, finals on the 23rd or 24th, closing no later than sunday 4pm.
The U20 divisions (WJUC) are scheduled to start on July 31st, so a week after U17s.
We are certain to have found a good host in the team Gentle, who are also very active in growing junior ultimate. Belgium was also the surprise team in U17 open at EYUC 2015, when as low seed they made it straight into the final. Also the Belgian junior teams have a history of good spirit results. We are delighted to now see an international junior championship organized in Belgium, which also has the practical advantage of relatively low travel costs for most nations with U17 national squads. The tournament costs are not defined yet but will remain in reasonable limits.
The tournament, as in 2014, will be labeled OYEUC, Open European Youth Ultimate Championships. The "OPEN" reflects the decision by European junior reps taken in 2013, to allow non European national teams to participate, in those years when WJUC is held in Europe.
Now, as the U17 and U20 championships are not happening at the same time and place as U20, we do not yet know if any team from outside Europe will make it. Fingers crossed!
We as EUF would have preferred to hold the tournament in parallel with WJUC. But know that this is not possible, we focus on the advantages that a U17 event of it's own can bring. The the level of competition in these divissions has improved so much in recent years, that the undivided attention U17 will get in Gent is a big plus.
So lastly: a happy new year!
